With the holidays upon us, there is an expectation. For some it’s an expectation of getting for others it’s an expectation of giving.
As much as we’d like to teach our kids that the expectation ought to lean toward giving, there is something else that helps to feed this inclination to give.
If we’ve ever watched the movie, the Grinch, we realize that the Grinch is suffering from something that happened when he was a little boy and his association with it and Christmas, makes him resent the holiday. And really focus on getting.
In part of the movie he ends up being the one that is launched into the city and surprisingly lights the Christmas tree in the center square. While it’s exciting when something like this happens, reality has shown us that sometimes, especially for us things don’t come that easy.
We are not usually launched into the mist of a community to come to an awakening of who we are, to eventually lead that out, and then come to some sort of positive resolution.
To have that kind of experience or to have that kind of influence takes work, it takes a venture. It’s takes the work of actually getting out there and getting to know people. Being consistent in building relationships and so on.
So maybe we’re not teaching our kids to be a grinch, but what places are we opening them up to to give them the opportunity to be an influence others… in a way that leads to giving.
